Being a parent shouldn’t prevent someone from investing in their education. 34-year-old Nathan Alexzander, a math professor who teaches at Morehouse College, agrees with this notion, which is why he recently helped out a student who was having trouble finding a babysitter.

As MyModernMet reports, new father Wayne Hayer wanted to attend Alexzander’s class but failed to find a babysitter for his daughter, Assata, in time. Unsure of what to do, he showed up with his “special guest.” Hayer was prepared to be sent home. Instead, he and his daughter were warmly welcomed by the professor. Furthermore, Alexzander offered to hold Assata.

“As one of my peers walked into the classroom with his child in arms he quickly explained to my professor that he couldn’t find a babysitter and had nobody else that could watch her,” Nick Vaughn, another student, wrote on Facebook. “My professor said, ‘No problem, in fact I will even hold her so you can take better notes in class.’ ”

For the entire hour-long lecture, Alexzander carried Assata around. He bounced, patted, and inadvertently lulled the baby to sleep. “When she started falling asleep, I told the class, ‘I guess I’m being boring right now,’ ” Alexzander lightheartedly told Buzzfeed News. Not long after the lecture, stories and photographs shared to social media by the students went viral.

Wayne wasn’t the only one relieved by Alexzander’s assistance. Firda Amalia Hayer, Assata’s mother, praised Alexzander on social media for his understanding and support. She said, “Thank you for encouraging us to continue to push forward. Thank you to black educators like Dr. Nathan Alexander [sic] for your compassion and understanding.” She also thanked the public for their “genuine love and enthusiasm.”
