This Israeli Startup Plans To Launch “World’s First” 3D-Printed Steak This Year

Global warming is probably the worst human-caused disaster. And one of the leading contributors to this cause is methane, produced by cattle. Stopping the consumption of animal meat will not only make Peta very happy, but it will actually contribute to saving our planet from complete destruction. And to this effect, an Israeli startup is planning to launch the ‘world’s first’ 3D-printed steak.

Road to the First 3D-Printed Steak

Alternative meats have been available in the market for the last couple of years. They provide the same taste and texture without any of the harm. Redefine Meat is a startup based in Israel planning to launch Alt-Steak, their 3D-printed steak, by this year. While 3D printing has been used to create some bizarre items, food is definitely new to this sector. Vegan meats are about to get rebooted if this 3D-printed steak turns out to be a success. The startup claims their Alt-Steak will have the same appearance, flavor, and texture as animal steak.

Founded in early 2018 as Jet Eat by “former meat consumer” Ben-Shitrit, Redefine Meat has sought to create a vegan meat alternative using digital processes in order to reduce meat consumption and keep food waste at bay.

Redefine Meat has been working with “meat experts” like chefs, food technologists, and butchers to understand the muscle structure of beef. They have been digitally mapping over 70 sensory factors to recreate a vegan, environment-friendly yet equally tasty steak.

The Ingredients for Alt-Steak

Alt-Steak is made from pea and soy proteins, sunflower oil, coconut fat, and include natural flavors and colors. A huge benefit of these plan-based vegan 3D-printed steaks is that they are high in protein yet have none of the bad cholesterol the animal counterparts have. You know what that means? No one will come and scold you for indulging in more than one steak!

Redefine Meat has special 3D models corresponding to different beef cuts. The models are loaded on the machine together with the Alt-Muscle, Fat, and Blood. The machine then starts the printing process according to the file, creating the food product dot by dot and then layer by layer “with a click of a button.”

The 3D-printed steak is all set to be tested in the real market. Many high-end Israeli restaurants are partnering with the Rehovot-based company to bring this alternative to the common public.
