The trend toward vegetarianism is one that cannot be stopped. Not only is eating a plant-based diet proven to be better for the environment and people’s health, but satiating faux meat options are now available in cafes and fast-food restaurants — including Kentucky’s Fried Chicken (KFC). And as a recent trial concluded, people want plant-based meat options.

In late August, a KFC in Atlanta, Georgia, debuted the Beyond Fried Chicken. The trial turned out to be a Kentucky Fried Miracle,” as all plant-based chicken nuggets and boneless wings sold out in a day. In fact, KFC sold more Beyond Chicken in five hours than it typically sells of popcorn chicken in an entire week. Prices ranged from $1.99 to $12.

Though the trial was a success, don’t expect Beyond Fried Chicken to roll out nationwide anytime soon. KFC is currently assessing the results to gauge consumer interest in plant-based imitation meats. The response “will be considered as KFC evaluates a broader test or potential national rollout.”

Because the nuggets and wings are processed and will be cooked in the same fryers as regular chicken, they aren’t likely to appeal to strict vegans. KFC is undeterred by this fact, however, as it aims to appeal to the “flexitarian” market, or people who are more flexible with their diets. At the end of the day, the fast-food chain is trying to make vegetarian fare more accessible.

In recent years, a number of fast-food restaurants have introduced beef alternatives, often in the form of the Beyond Burger. But, this is the first time a major franchise has introduced a faux chicken alternative. According to Yahoo! Finance, Beyond Meat’s stock value climbed by 5 percent during the one-day trial. As a result, it seems imminent that Beyond Fried Chicken will be made more readily available.
