LG has recently announced their PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier masks that can be worn by everyone. This air purifier mask comes with replaceable filters, quite similar to what LG offers in their home air purifiers. These masks also have battery-powered fans so that the wearer can breathe easily. Almost like a ‘smart’ mask, the company has claimed that this product has sensors that adjust the speeds of the fan based on whether one is breathing in or breathing out.

While the company did not relate the mask directly to the ongoing pandemic, the implications were quite clear. Masks have become an essential item for all those who care about their health. And LG was quick to develop a product that is perfectly timed. While disposable masks are often in short supply, the homemade masks are not consistent enough always. LG claims their air purifier mask can replace such options with a better alternative.

New Air Purifier Mask Introduced By LG

LG had made the first announcement about the air purifier masks in July and had said that they will donate 2000 of the masks to a Seoul university hospital. One company executive was quoted by The Korea Herald as saying that the device would help medical warriors “amid the protracting COVID-19 pandemic.” The company was hopeful their masks would make it easier for the medical workers to wear such devices for long hours.

One important part of the official announcement made in August is that LG did not claim their device would slow the spread of the novel virus. Neither did they refer to any filtration of the air while exhaling or inhaling. LG told The Verge that they are waiting for certain certifications they have applied for before they make any claims.

CDC, USA, recommends not wearing maks with exhalation valves since the valves don’t filter the expelled droplets. Hence even while wearing such valved-masks, people could be spreading the virus and infecting others.

The motorized fans of the air purifier mask have an 820mAh battery. On low-power mode, it can provide 8 hours of usage, while on high-power mode, it works for only 2 hours.

There was no mention of the exact date of release or the cost. They only mentioned that the air purifier mask will be available in select markets in the fourth quarter of 2020.
