A horrifying incident from the Bronx is sending shivers down the spines of New Yorkers. Leonard Shoulders was walking near a bus stop on Saturday when the pavement under him caved in. Shoulders fell into a 15ft deep rat-infested sinkhole.

This nightmarish incident left Shoulders trapped underground for over half an hour. His brother Greg White, told CBS New York, “Rats crawling on him, he can’t move. He didn’t want to yell because he was afraid there were going to be rats inside his mouth.”

A witness explained how he peered down to locate Shoulders and saw him moving only his hand. When the emergency crew rescued him from the sinkhole, he was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher. From there, he went to St. Barnabas Hospital.

After falling into the rat-infested sinkhole, Shoulders sustained injuries in his face, arms, and legs. As of Thursday, the hospital told the New York Times that the man was in a stable condition.

Cindy White, his mother, explained that while Shoulders was falling down, the debris also hit him in the head. His fall into the rat-infested sinkhole drew visceral reactions from locals. Experts say due to the pandemic, more and more rats are forced to come out of hiding to find food.
