Hold onto your seats, the new trailer for ‘Blade Runner: 2049,’ to be released in October, is here. And, the most chilling part of the film is that it portrays a future which isn’t too far off from what might pass in years to come.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the new Blade movie takes place in the year 2049 – 30 years after the events of the first film. As Futurism reports, the movie retains the iconic futuristic aesthetic of the original film which won over fans in the 1980’s but is modern enough to resemble a possible dystopian future (which is somewhat terrifying).

In 2049, the world is both grimy and unappealing. Quite possibly, this is a result of climate change propelled by unsustainable habits. Whatever the scenario that results in a near-uninhabitable world, only the poor remain on the planet as the rich have been shuttled off to luxury colonies in space. Additionally, humanoid robots equipped with advanced artificial intelligence are common realities at this point.

Because the movie features actors such as Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, it is likely to be a hit. However, there are certain elements which relate to present-day life on Earth that should not be missed. One of the most prominent is that if humans fail to remedy the gaps of inequality between people of different races and ethnicities, economic classes, and genders, the confusion and destruction that already exists will only evolve and persist.

Considering Stephen Hawking recently predicted humans will be forced to leave Earth within the next 100 years to survive, the plot of the movie does not seem inconceivable. Of course, the physicist also believes artificial intelligence will “undoubtedly” destroy humanity. Both remain to be seen. What is known is that a number of present-day travesties could easily be remedied in 2017 alone.

For instance, enough food is presently produced on the planet to feed 10 billion people, yet 795 million still go to bed hungry each night due to greed and the mass population’s refusal to stand up and do something about persisting conundrums. Hopefully, dystopian futures portrayed in movies such as the new Blade Runner inspire activists to do something before it is too late.
