Ndakasi, Mountain Gorilla Famous For Selfie, Died At 14

Ndakasi, the mountain gorilla that turned into a global sensation after clicking a selfie with a forest ranger, recently passed away. In quite a tragic scene, the 14-year-old primate was seen lying in the arms of her carer and friend Andre Bauma- who was also featured in that iconic selfie. The image was posted by Virunga National Park in Congo on their social media channels. The caption for the post was quite heart-breaking as the National Park spoke about the death of their beloved gorilla who was under their care for around a decade.

The Life of Ndakasi, The Mountain Gorilla

The post further stated that on the evening of the 26th of September, Ndakasi the mountain gorilla passed away, after fighting a prolonged battle with an illness that led to her condition deteriorating rapidly. After the news was shared on the 5th of October, the picture was then liked by over 31,000 different accounts. Several individuals also shared their condolences for Mr. Bauma and the rest of the park carers.

This led to an outpouring of condolences, with one user replying that the mountain gorilla would be missed by a lot. Another user also stated that the iconic picture was a symbol of a loving friendship between humans and primates. Another commenter wrote that she would now be residing in “God’s loving hands”.  Back in 2019, Ndakasi had hit the headlines when a picture of her and another gorilla surfaced with a member of the anti-poaching unit.

In the photo that soon went viral, Ndakasi the mountain gorilla was seen puffing her chest out with Matabishi, another gorilla that was rescued as they were taking a picture with the forest ranger who saved them from being poached.
