With a growing shift towards renewable energy, cheap and effective methods of storing energy and smoothing out fluctuations are needed. Research suggests that mountains can be used to store pressurised air and thus provide us with an alternative energy source.

The Shift To Renewable Energy

In January this year, Swiss voters also backed the government’s plan to provide billions of dollars in subsidies for renewable energy, ban new nuclear plants and help bail out struggling utilities. In June 2017, China ran an entire region on 100% renewable energy for 7 days. The province had a population of 5.8 million and showed that the electricity grid could cope without fossil fuels. In addition, China has decreased their coal usage by 5% year on year and has taken over United States in renewable energy. Furthermore, by 2027, India has said that 60% of its energy source will be provided outside of fossil fuels. In Europe, France also stopped granting licenses for oil and gas exploration as part of a transition towards environmentally friendly energy.

There appears to be a global shift towards renewable energy. We are slowly but surely turning our attention to environmentally friendly methods. This video suggests that mountains may provide a cost-effective solution to renewable energy sources. The markets suitable for this technology are Europe, USA and especially India and China.
