Dad Teaches Transgender Son How To Shave In New Gillette Commercial

In a controversial new Gillette ad, a doting father teaches his transgender son how to shave. Some people have called the advert “progressive,” whereas others have criticized the brand for being “too political.”

As Gay Star News reports, the video was released on May 23 and features Samson Brown and his dad. The caption reads: “Whenever, wherever, however it happens – your first shave is special.”

“I’m at the point in my manhood where I’m actually happy. It’s not just myself transitioning, it’s everybody around me transitioning,” says Samson.

“Thank you so much Gillette,” Samson wrote underneath the new advertisement. “For allowing me to share such an important moment in a man’s life with my father.’

He added, “I look forward to the great things you’re going to continue doing to encourage us all to be our best selves.”

The shaving brand responded:

“Thank you for sharing your story, Samson! We’re honored to showcase this special moment between you and your father and are proud to have you as a partner. Thank you for your courage and confidence in sharing your journey to becoming your best self!”

This isn’t the first time Gillette’s advertisements have made headlines. Earlier this year, the brand rereleased a short film on toxic masculinity. Gillette also made as statement about the rise of the #MeToo movement.

In the caption of the YouTube video, Gillette wrote: “Bullying. Harassment. Is this the best a man can get?”

“It’s only by challenging ourselves to do more, that we can get closer to our best. To say the right thing, to act the right way,” they added.
