Are Buddhists Attached To Non Attachment?
Tags: opinion
Many spiritual seekers have found a strong affinity with Buddhism as Buddha himself never claimed to be a god or deity and while it is not 100% accurate to say buddhist do not believe in a god or gods- it is accurate to say they place a lot of emphasis on self development or us as humans taking responsibility for our own path.
Buddhists live by the Four Noble: 1) existence is suffering, 2) the cause of suffering is craving and attachment, 3) suffering ceases at some point and turns to Nirvana (which is liberation or total bliss) and 4) there is a path to Nirvana.
The path to Nirvana is what is known as the Eightfold Path.
- Right Understanding (Samma ditthi)
- Right Thought (Samma sankappa)
- Right Speech (Samma vaca)
- Right Action (Samma kammanta)
- Right Livelihood (Samma ajiva)
- Right Effort (Samma vayama)
- Right Mindfulness (Samma sati)
- Right Concentration (Samma samadhi)
This makes up a beautiful philosophy for living, however is it perfect? Bruce Lee said “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” and could this be said for Buddhism?
Attachment is said to be the cause of suffering, however could it not be argued that attachment to attachment is the root of all suffering? Meaning it is okay to be attached, so long as you can detach should you need too?
I explore this and a few other things in this video:
