We are facing environmental problems, global warming, food shortages, poor racial relations, war, famine and disease. These intentional communities are changing our perceptions, the way we view the world, people, culture and our relationship with nature. They are sanctuaries’ of peace, offering radical experimentation, they challenge conventional thinking, provide creative alternatives and are also spiritually enriching.

Whether you have the travel bug, want to study somewhere cool or find yourself at a crossroads, these five intentional communities are worth checking out. Embrace the beauty and wisdom of the natural world.

Kalu Yala, Panama

Kalu Yala means sacred land. It is situated in a discrete valley in Panama and was founded in 2008. It is a fairly new community that is still evolving. They have a simple ethos – to be for profit, as well as sustainable. There are currently a number of entrepreneurs, teachers, scientists and artists who are working in the community to develop a sustainable modern town.

They also have programs that are progressive in nature, such as culinary arts, design thinking – working to build a town that is synonymous with permaculture – farm to table foods, socially conscious start-ups, community living and a healthy human-waste cycle which focuses on composting rather than pollution, They also promote a health human-waste cycle where waste is composted and returned to the earth.

Tamera, The Healing Biotope, Portugal

Tamera is a self-sufficient community home to approximately 170 workers and students. They challenge conventional thinking and current societal norms. The community use love to heal our current misconceptions of gender norms, sexual attraction, amongst other things. Since its inception in 1995 , Tamera’s central focus has been peace, creating a society where people from all cultural backgrounds and religious practices can live in harmony.

They have many project groups, from Feminine peace wisdom – which is centred on gender equality, where women are empowered and taught that they are equal to man – to Healing Groups where spiritual choices and not hospitals and prescription drugs shape health.

Findhorn Foundation, Scotland

Findhorn Foundation is located in north-east Scotland, UK. There are approximately 400 creatives from all over the world who now call Findhorn home. They are trying to find positive solutions to the worlds most complex problems and use their knowledge of progressive socio-economic growth to conduct a number of outreach workshops all over the world.

Whether you want to visit for a weekend with bed and breakfast or head over for an Experience week, Findhorn has you covered. They aim to bridge the gap between human thinking and all facets of life, facilitating a deeper connection to the self and others.

Auroville, India

The real treasure of India is its spiritual heritage. India is known for its spirituality and philosophy. It comes as no surprise that one of the oldest intentional communities was founded in south India. Over 2,500 people from around the world now live there and it continues to grow from strength to strength. You’ll have to see it to believe it.
