Britney Spears Supports Call For Strike, Redistribution Of Wealth
Pop idol Britney Spears has given her support to the ideas of a general strike and the redistribution of wealth.
The coronavirus pandemic has left the world in turmoil. It’s also highlighted the huge inequalities which exist in societies across the globe.
The crisis which has been thrust upon us has also caused people to take stock and to question the systems which govern us.
And celebrities have been having their say too. Including Britney Spears, who reposted this Instagram message by Mimi Zhu which calls for wealth redistribution.
“We need connection now more than ever. Call your loved ones, write virtual letters. Technologies like virtual communication, streaming and broadcasting are part of our community collaboration.
“We will learn to kiss and hold each other through the waves of the web. We will feed each other, re-distribute wealth, strike.
“We will understand our own importance from the places we must stay. Communion moves beyond walls. We can still be together.”
Her followers generally reacted well to the repost.
Is Spears happy to redistribute her own wealth?
However, some did question whether wealth redistribution applied to Spears herself.
Last week though Spears announced via an Instagram video that she would select three fans who needed assistance during the coronavirus crisis.
“Our world is going through such hard times right now,” Spears commented in the video. “Whether it’s with food or I’m getting your child diapers or whatever it is, DM me and I will help you out.”
She also used the #DoYourPartChallenge hashtag – a movement in which people underline how they’ve been helping others, and then nominate three more people to do the same.
The pop queen tagged actors Will Smith and Kate Hudson, and her boyfriend, Sam Asghari.
What did Mimi Zhu think of Spears’ response?
According to Papermag, Zhu is a ‘a queer Chinese-Australian artist based in Brooklyn who moved to the United States two years ago to pursue her twin dreams of writing and community organizing’.
Zhu was thrilled to have captured Britney’s attention.
“Britney Spears was a very prominent figure in mine — I used to sing and dance to her songs, at talent shows and whatever. So when I found out, I literally dropped my phone, I was like Britney? I was so on it, and grateful, I was like wow she resonated with something I wrote,” Zhu said.
“With all that anxiety and confusion I knew I had to write what I wrote, and there were definitely socialist undertones, because in general that is what I do believe in.
“I really just wanted to write out a message of connection and tenderness during this really chaotic time. And the fact that Britney Spears — somebody whose position and path in life is so different to mine, and yet I have connected to her as a child.
“I thought that was a really interesting connection between the two of us, the fact that she resonated with something I wrote, while in my childhood I resonated with some things she has done.”
Spears added three red roses to her post, possibly a nod to the Democratic Socialist movement.
She’s voiced her opinion about politics in the past too. In 2017 she asked her supporters to get behind the Dream Act. (The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors).
The singer also backed George W Bush during the Iraq war and in 2001 was registered as a Republican in Louisiana.
