On June 14th, 2018, thousands sang ‘One Love’ by Bob Marley together in Jerusalem. Christians, Muslims, and Jews- all were seen standing together, singing the beautiful song.
This grand event occurred during Koolulam, which is a musical initiative that cuts across social boundaries. The song was not sung in only one language. Rather English, Hebrew, and Arabic versions of the song were all sung together! This made the event even more special.
The Tower of David and the thousands of people in Jerusalem witnessed this historical event. Koolulam is known for organizing such large group singing events. They are generally attended by non-professional singers.
The idea behind the events is to promote religious harmony through music. It aims to bring people together, under one roof, singing one song. Thousands sang ‘One Love’ in this major event and all of them belonged to different faiths.
Koolulam had invited people who were strangers to each other for this special event. It was organized to show honor to Sheikh Haji Yahya Cholil Staquf, Indonesia’s religious leader, visiting Israel.
Staquf is the secretary-general of Nahdlatul Ulama, an Indonesia-based Muslim organization. It is the world’s largest Muslim organization with about 60 million members.
Sheikh Haji had watched one of Koolulam’s videos. After this, he contacted Koolulam to become a part of this inter-faith singing event. It so happened that the Tower of David and Jerusalem were also ready to be its sponsors.

The night this major event took place it was Eid-al-Fitr. Ramadan had just ended and Sheikh Haji was visiting Israel. The song was sung by people in three languages and three different parts. It was a show of harmony and unity on the part of Israel.
Koolulam takes up a famous song and performs it in a new form. The unique thing about its events is that people are all strangers to each other. They learn the song during the event and then perform it then and there. All such events by Koolulam are posted on social media like Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
This performance where thousands sang ‘One Love’ by Bob Marley was one of a kind. The atmosphere was energetic and buzzing, teaching everyone the lesson of harmony.
