In response to the large donations that came in last week for the restoration of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the hacktivist collective Anonymous has issued a statement reaching out to the billionaires who pledged the money. In a video of this message, an unidentified figure broadcasting from an unknown location took these large donors to task for their “selective charity.” The video was accompanied by a press release summarizing the group’s statement.

Anonymous was dismayed that these wealthy interests were silent in the face of very serious issues like poverty, environmental destruction or war, but are very quick to pull out their checkbooks when it is time to preserve a symbol of their own “cultural dominance.”

“It is admirable that you were willing to reach into your pockets during a time of national crisis (if you want to call it that), but now the people of the world are wondering why you don’t show this type of compassion when people’s lives are actually at stake. Luckily, no one was hurt during this week’s fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France. Yet, the partial loss of a historical building has gathered more donations than any natural disaster or poverty crisis in the past several years,” the press release read.

The statement also appealed to the humanity of the billionaires who donated, pleading with them to readjust their priorities and use their wealth for the betterment of the world.

Anonymous also called out the pope himself, asking why the Vatican wasn’t paying for the restoration of their own church when they are an organization that is worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

The statement closed on a very interesting note, by comparing the Vatican with the family of the recently deceased rapper and philanthropist Nipsey Hussle, and seeming to suggest that the late rapper’s family is more godly than the pope.

“The family of the recently deceased rapper and philanthropist Nipsey Hussle were in the news last week for turning down crowdfunded donations intended for the children of the performer. The family stated that Nipsey was a rich man and left plenty of money behind so his children would be set for life, and that it would not be fair for them to take other people’s money. These are the actions of people walking a spiritual path. Meanwhile, the organizations that claim to speak for God are showing that they are filled with greed and vanity,” the press release read.

A similar statement was released through the same Anonymous website earlier this month. The previous press release was addressed to the captors of Julian Assange. As Truth Theory reported, multiple government websites in the UK and US were taken down in the days following the warning from Anonymous.

The Yellow Vest protesters of France were also dismayed by the large donations that have come in for the cathedral. Many of them believe that spending such large sums on an opulent church is wasteful when people are starving.

Ingrid Levavasseur, a founding leader of the Yellow Vest movement, expressed her frustrations with an Associated Press reporter before a demonstration that she participated in this weekend.

“You’re there, looking at all these millions accumulating, after spending five months in the streets fighting social and fiscal injustice. It’s breaking my heart. What happened at Notre-Dame is obviously a deplorable tragedy. But nobody died. I’ve heard someone speaking of national mourning. Are they out of their minds?” Levavasseur said.
