Let’s talk about corporate workdays and why they are just stressful. An average human being is expected to do 8 hours of uninterrupted work. There are very few breaks and apart from these breaks, one cannot really leave the chair without getting penalized. Moreover, people are asked to repeat this arduous task five or six days a week.

It is especially this case in Japan where people were literally dying of white collar exhaustion. People just collapsed on the road after an unbearable day at work.

There are ongoing talks in New Zealand, as a matter of fact, to reduce the workweek to 4 days.

Anyway, generally, in the afternoon, people feel the energy drainage and get a little sleepy. It can easily be countered with thirty minutes of quality rest. However, since the “corporate” environment does not think it’s appropriate, people just drudge on. But, at the same time, several big American corporations have allowed their employees to have power snoozes so that they could work better. These corporations include HuffPost, Mercedes-Benz and even NASA.

But the entire issue might be solved by this revolutionary new invention from none other than Japan itself. The retailer “Thanko” has created a chair that doubles up as a perpendicular flatbed. They appropriately call it ‘Lay Flat Office Chair’. Its entire function is all in the name.

Arriving unassembled and costing around 600 USD, or around 50000 JPY, this chair weighs around 50 pounds, and measures about two feet wide by 51 inches high by 69 inches depth in dimensions.

However, Amazon has other great and similar options too. There’s the XUERUI 360 degree swivels, which reclines to 145 degrees unlike Thanko’s 180 degrees, and starts at USD 600 (approx). There are cheaper options too, like the HAPPYBUY executive swivel, starting at just USD 115 (approx).

If Thanko has your heart with its flatness USP, go to their website and buy one for your office today. But you should be wary to have two things:

  1. Your manager’s permission; and
  2. A Japanese speaking friend because you will need help buying from their website.

With huge corporations like Google encouraging employees to go nap a little, it is almost certain that many other workplaces will go for it in the future. Listen to Sara C. Mednick, PhD, a sleep expert, on how to take a nap and keep the following tips in mind:

  • Nap no longer than 20-30 mins.
  • Nap at the same time every day.
  • Have an office blanket as warmer temperatures tend to help you fall asleep.
  • Do not try to sleep in a noisy or bright place. It will just give you a headache.
  • Do not nap too late in the day. They will disrupt your night’s sleep; and
  • Do not take a nap in the day if you are an insomniac or suffer some other sleep condition as it can aggravate it.

It’s great to be a working professional and earning your keep. But taking care of your body and mind are paramount, especially in an age where your entire lifestyle will almost always come in conflict with your health. So, get yourself a power sleep.

Happy napping.
