The houses that we live in have evolved from giant caves to skyscrapers but Nature isn’t far behind. Birds make nests to welcome their young ones and they do so with perfection. There are several kinds of nests. The easiest and the simplest one being a scrape nest which is a dent in the ground that holds the eggs. Burrow and cavity nests are similar. Weavers create the pendant nest that is nothing short of a masterpiece. However, this innovative hummingbird has shown us a completely new kind of nest – one that has a roof!

Hummingbirds are known to be restless but they make sure their young ones are cozy and warm.  Bianca Caroline Soares, a conservationist from Paraguay, has always spotted tiny and intricate nests in the jungle. However, one Spring she spotted something very unique amidst the four other nests that she had seen on that day.

One small hummingbird had decided to protect its younglings from the harsh rays of the sun with a leaf roof. Yes, you read that right. The nest amused Soares and she looked at it carefully. She couldn’t disagree that the nest was both creative and functional.

Soares’ curiosity knew no bounds and she was determined to meet the family of this intelligent hummingbird. After her first visit, she kept checking up on the nest and found two tiny hummingbird babies. It gets quite hot in the jungle and the babies would be spared the heat because of the unique roof. Their mother surely knows it all. Soares hopes that the effort of this hummingbird will stay with the babies who will implement it when they build nests. She also hopes that Nature’s beauty will inspire humans to not encroach upon the natural habitat of animals and birds.

The hummingbirds along with other birds have trouble finding the perfect nesting place because of pollution. Soares sees a brighter future when the ecosystem will be more balanced and we humans will learn to respect natural boundaries.
