Theme Park Apologizes For Forcing A Live Pig To Bungee Jump

A disturbing video has surfaced from China, where a live pig was forced to bungee jump at a theme park. Footage taken at the park shows a live pig hooked up to a bungee cord and then thrown off a platform that is about 68 meters high.

The stunt was organized as a part of the grand opening of the bungee jumping attraction. Crowds that gathered can be heard laughing and cheering as the pig is thrown off of the platform. However, the footage quickly sparked outrage among many Chinese residents who saw it on social media.

The incident occurred on January 18 at the Meixin Red Wine Town theme park in south-western China, and footage of the stunt quickly went viral.

The event was called ‘The golden pig bungee jump’ and was intended to be somewhat of a demonstration for the bungee attraction.

PETA and other animal rights groups quickly picked up on the footage and began sharing it around.

In a statement to the BBC, a PETA spokesperson said,  “… pigs experience pain and fear in the same ways that we do, and this disgusting PR stunt should be illegal. The Chinese public’s angry response should be a wake-up call to China’s policy-makers to implement animal protection laws immediately.”

Jacqueline Mills, Head of Campaigns, Farming at World Animal Protection said, “It’s horrifying to think what this pig must have gone through. Pigs are highly intelligent and sentient creatures, sensitive to their surroundings and human handling. This pig couldn’t even move afterwards, suggesting it was left extremely traumatized and potentially injured and in physical pain. This stunt was a sickening act of cruelty, causing extreme fear and distress. Regardless of whether this animal is destined to be slaughtered, it is still a living being that deserves a life worth living.”

The theme park later apologized for the attraction and promised to improve its “marketing” in the future.

“We sincerely accept netizens’ criticism and advice and apologize to the public. We will improve [our] marketing of the tourist site, to provide tourists with better services,” a statement from the theme park read.

According to 7NewsAU, the pig was reportedly taken to a slaughterhouse after the stunt was over.
