One of the many things that makes Tesla vehicles unique is the fact that the company does “over the air” updates to tweak the functionality of the car on a regular basis.
In the newest update, Tesla announced a feature called ‘Dog Mode,’ which keeps the car a comfortable temperature for any animals inside, even if the car is turned off. Anyone who looks inside the car will also be notified that the vehicle is a safe temperature.
On the large touch screen in the centre of the vehicle, a message will be displayed that reads “My owner will be back soon. Don’t worry! The A/C is on and it’s [temperature].” A similar message will appear to show that the heat is on in cold weather.
The new feature will be available in the Model S, Model X, and Model 3. Teslarati suggested that this could be an extension of the “Overheat Cabin Protection amenity” which Tesla released in 2016.
Overheat Cabin Protection is still limited in its functionality, as it was only designed to periodically start the car’s air conditioning system to prevent the car from reaching extreme heats while it was parked. However, the new Dog Mode feature will allow Tesla owners to select whatever temperature they want for the inside of the vehicle while they are gone.

In a statement that customers received with the update, Tesla said:
“Keep your dog comfortable in your car while letting people passing by know they don’t need to worry with Dog Mode. In addition to keeping the climate control on, the touchscreen will display the current cabin temperature. To enable Dog Mode, tap the fan icon at the bottom of the touchscreen when your car is parked. Set Keep Climate On to DOG, make adjustments within temperature limits, then leave knowing your pet will stay comfortable. Dog Mode will stay on after you leave your car. If your battery reaches less than 20% charge, you will receive a notification on your mobile app.”

If you are a Tesla owner, it is very easy to activate this function. Just, tap the fan icon at the bottom of the touchscreen when the vehicle is parked, then toggle “Keep Climate On” to “DOG.”
It just takes a few minutes for cars to reach lethal temperatures on a hot day. Every single year, the lives of hundreds of dogs are lost because their owners left them in the car for “a few minutes,” without the air conditioning turned on. Hopefully, features like this will become a standard as the technology inside all vehicles become more advanced.
