Taipei Cleverly Transforms Public Subway Cars Into Immersive Sports Venues

To get people excited over the upcoming Summer Universiade, an international sporting and cultural event some say is “second only to the Olympic Games,” Taipei City has transformed the interior of their mass rapid transit (MRT) trains to look like various sporting event venues. The “goal” is to remind people of the upcoming 29th edition of the Games, which are taking place from August 19 to August 30, 2017.

DesignYouTrust reports that the international event is an honor to host, as student-athletes from around the world compete and celebrate both “friendship and sportsmanship.” Reportedly, over 70 new venues have been constructed by the city of Taipei.

As some of the photos below reveal, a number of train cars now have their floors decorated with soccer fields, tracks, basketball courts and aquatics. The splash of color and texture add an extra appeal to the ordinary-looking trains, and may even make commutes more enjoyable for a time.

While events like the Olympic Games tend to be extraordinary wasteful (read more here), it’s interesting to report on the creative way the city of Taipei is encouraging citizens to get more involved with local happenings.
