Every now and again, you read a story that is near unbelievable. This is one of them.
In India, menstruation is still considered to be a very taboo topic. Because of this, a teacher harshly reprimanded a 7th grader for accidentally staining her uniform and bench with period blood. The 12-year-old girl was so ashamed, she chose to kill herself rather than deal with the embarrassment.
Metro reports that the girl attended a school in Palayamkottai Town, in Tirunelveli District, Southern India. She was found dangling from her neighbor’s terrace, after jumping in the early hours of the morning. Reportedly, her parents had no idea she was suicidal and only found out about her reasons in a letter she wrote to them.
It said, “I don’t know what to say. Until now you didn’t hear any complaints about me but why did the teacher complain about me like this?” According to local reports, the teacher shouted at the girl in front of her classmates.
As a result of the tragic happening, a protest sprang up by the parents of pupils who were enraged by the girl’s death. Police managed to break up the crowd and only promised action. A senior police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been launched. They said, “Right now we are hearing different versions. Only after the completion of probe will we have clarity.”
Worldwide, teen depression and rates of suicide are on the rise. However, India stands apart as it presently has the highest suicide rate in the world among people aged 15-29. According to the World Health Organization, it stands at 35.5 per 100,000 people for 2012, the last year for which numbers are available. This is a big problem.
In Asian countries specifically, many young people are made to feel as if they should be “perfect,” and this has resulted in skyrocketing rates of depression. Only when humanity realizes that perfection is an impossible concept, as the universe and all of life is constantly changing and in flux, will it be possible for the collective to address this emotional sabotage and move on. For now, people of all ages who feel depressed or suicidal are encouraged to talk to friends and family members they trust, and to contact compassionate health professionals who specialize in mental afflictions.
