Are You Listening? 4 Key Ways To Become A Better Communicator
Do you find your mind wandering when you are sat in a long meeting at work? Do you actually listen to what people say, or are you just waiting to reply? Listening is the key to great relationships. The ability to tune in and actively listen to one another is not always easy. Being a good listener is about being present in the moment and just like any skill, it takes practice.
Be Prepared To Listen
Don’t let your attention wane! Make sure that you relax your body and mind so that you can receive the information. Take a few deep breaths, turn toward the speaker and remain present.
Give The Speaker Your Full Attention
In order to be a good listener, you need to stay focused on the conversation. You have to show the speaker that you care about what they are saying. Whilst they are talking, do no not engage in other activities such as reading, writing, texting and the like. Make sure that you are fully invested in the conversation and being attentive.
Don’t Interrupt
Interrupting is disruptive. You should always let the speaker finish their point. If you don’t quite understand what they are saying, wait for a pause to interject. Do not make a comment before the speaker is done speaking as this can cause them to lose sight of what the point they were trying to make.
Be Open-Minded
Try to listen to what the speaker has to say without judging them. You should also avoid the need to justify your own opinions. Be sure to listen to everything they have to say before letting them know how you think and feel. Another way to be open-minded is to be patient. Don’t try and figure out what you think the speaker is trying to say. Just listen intently and concentrate on the words that are coming out of their mouth.
