Kobe Bryant’s career defined greatness. He had his ups and downs, and he still went on, scoring basket after basket, laying up, defending, and shooting free throws with a ferocity that few possessed. During the period of 2003-2004, he suddenly found himself at the edge of a precipice, with his personal and professional lives going down. This could have been the end of his career, but it wasn’t meant to be so. He came back, and came back much stronger. The ‘Mamba’ mentality- this is what made Kobe Bryant, ‘King’ Kobe. He was a consummate professional, with a deadly eye for success.
What is it that separates an individual from greatness? It is his hesitation to not be able to let go of inhibitions. Your brain tells you to stop, to let go after a while. You are modeled to prevent too much strain on your body. But that also prevents you from reaching the heights that you have always envisioned for yourself.
In Kobe’s case, he outdid himself. His ‘Mamba Mentality’ book talks about how important it is to be passionate about what you want. Kobe Bryant breathed basketball. All the training, the studying, the working out, or the playing- they never tired him. In fact, he loved every second of his life as a basketball player for the LA Lakers, and the USMNT. He knew what it was worth, and what was at stake, and he couldn’t let go of that. He mentioned in several interviews that it was important to live the game. To live and love whatever it is you are doing. Otherwise, it can get too easy to branch out and lose focus. If you lose the zeal towards something that you believe is your dream, it doesn’t remain your dream anymore.
Not all of us are willing to go the extra mile to be perfect at the things that our loved ones expect from us. But again, as Kobe puts it correctly “You got to do what you got to do” for the things that you love because that’s the only way towards greatness. That is how you’d leave a mark and always live in the hearts of millions around the world.
