What you seek is seeking you. This means that any notion or grand ambition you feel called to explore in some way is part of your purpose. However, just because you feel alignment with certain ways of “being” and “living” doesn’t mean they will easily manifest into your life if you do not put forth the effort.
To lead a successful and happy life, you have to be willing to work — especially when you don’t want to. However, doing so is the most rewarding way to live life. Just ask Joe Rogan, a former Taekwondo champion, black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, accomplished stand-up comedian, host of an incredibly popular podcast, and an award-winning commentator.
Rogan is one of the first people to tell it like it is. In his own words, he doesn’t “bullshit.” This means that, unlike most people you meet, the comedian and free-thinker don’t sugarcoat the truth. To some people, this can be offensive. However, this is how Rogan lives his life and it has undoubtedly has contributed to his success.
On the mat, off the mat, in his home, or in front of a television, Rogan is “on.” And, he has several tips to share about how you, too, can invite health and success into your own life.
In the following video, Rogan offers insight about his daily routine. He says a person’s routine is the “root cause” of their success — or lack thereof.
Following are 6 tips outlined by Joe Rogan you should implement if you strive for more success:
1) Plan your week in advance
Like many successful people, Rogan plans his week in advance. He does this to ensure his time is used wisely and to increase productivity. As the saying goes, “Those who move mountains begin by carrying away small stones.”
How you can do the same: On Sunday night, outline the major objectives you seek to accomplish in the coming week. Don’t stop there, however. Make a plan for how you will meet the goals. If that means you need to set time aside to meal prep, go to the gym, or make healthy cupcakes for your daughter’s bake sale, so be it.
2) Exercise & Eat Healthy
When your body is healthy, so is your mind. This is why Rogan recommends eating clean and training hard. It might not be easy to stick to a healthy regime, but it is essential if you want to live a good life and crush our goals.
How you can do the same:
Say “goodbye” to excuses, kick your own ass in gear, and start implementing healthy habits. One of the easiest ways to do this is to consume a green smoothie every day (recipe here), add a salad to your evening dinner, and omit white flour, refined sugar, and artificial preservatives and colorings from your diet. After a while, you’ll notice you have increased energy, enhanced cognitive focus, and a desire to eat healthier.
3) Meditate
When most people hear the word “meditation,” they immediately think of sitting in a stationary pose for an hour, chanting the word “Om.” Though this can produce a transcendental experience, it is not the only way to meditate.
Other ways to meditate include doing yoga, going on a walk with your dog, or lying in a sensory deprivation tank — all of which Rogan practices himself.
How you can do the same:
Yoga is about cultivating stillness in the mind and peace in the body. To get started, find an activity that relaxes and inspires you, such as wandering in nature, cleaning, or dancing to fun music. Whatever feels right for you, do it. The most important thing is that you set time aside for meditation.
4) Self-Reflect
It is impossible to know where you are going unless you know where you have been. This is the principle of self-reflection. Though Rogan doesn’t mention self-reflection being a part of his daily routine, he does speak about it in great detail in the video above. As A New Kind of Human reports, his devotion to the topic shows he is very dedicated to the art of self-improvement.
Those who avoid self-reflection tend to develop psychological issues. Additionally, it is not uncommon for they read habits to intensify over time (after all, if they don’t think they are doing anything wrong, why would they change?). On the other hand, those who spend time reflecting on their true nature, their actions in this life, and the way they desire to change tend to be well-adjusted.
How you can do the same:
A great way to begin self-reflection is to journal. Every day, write about the so-called good and bad things that happened. Note how you responded (not reacted) to each hurdle or dose of good news, and visit your journal entries frequently.
5) Read books — a lot of them
Some of the most successful people read at least one book per month. This acknowledged, it should come as no surprise that Rogan is an avid reader.
Why are books so helpful? Because whatever problem you are dealing with, someone has written a book on it. All you need to do to become a better version of yourself is to read more, self-reflect, and take the necessary steps to reach your goals.
How you can do the same:
Make reading a priority in your life. Every night before bed, read for at least 15 minutes.
6) Stop making excuses — you either want it or don’t
Every year, billions of people make New Year’s resolutions. And you know how many actually stick to them? A tiny, tiny percentage. This is because people have become complacent with the attitude of “oh well, I tried.” In reality, few have actually tried. People like to pretend they do so they can feel better about themselves, but where does that actually get them? Nowhere.
It is because of this that Rogan says it is imperative to stop making excuses. When his guest on the podcast mentioned that he doesn’t have two hours to exercise each day, Rogan corrected him and explained that it takes just 40 minutes to get a good workout in.
How you can do the same:
At the end of the day, those who are committed to success will succeed. Those who are committed to making excuses will not. If you seek to achieve a goal, let go of excuses and maximize every second, of every minute, of every hour, every day. This is your life — now live it as you please.
