New technological developments continue to astound. The latest to “wow” onlookers is a “zipper truck,” which assembles tunnels and archways by simply locking together pre-made concrete blocks designed to fit neatly together.
ZME Science reports that Lock-Block Ltd. has completely revolutionized the tunnel-building process by slashing construction time by up to 90% with its innovative arch-lock assembly. When the “zipper truck” is utilized, tunnels, shelters, archways and overpasses can be built in a fraction of the normal time. Best of all, quality is assured.
A quarter mile of tunnel, for instance, can be built in less than 24 hours. Additionally, it can be used immediately. Not only does this cut costs, it reduces risk and the time demand construction zones present.
The “zipper truck” is a structure of rollers which are held in place by a tapered metal core. Because the front of the truck is quite wide, it allows for placement of the tailored lock-blocks which slide closer to fit together — kind of like a zipper on one’s jacket — as the truck slowly accelerates. The end result is a sturdy structure that requires no mortar or adhesive to stay together.
An additional benefit of using the technique is that the arches remain seismic resistant. And, in the case of new construction, the blocks easily disassemble and can be reused. What other structures could be “zipped” together?
