What appears to be a simple vending machine gives back so much more than cookies or soda. The “Giving Machine” allows users to donate essential items to local and international charities with the swipe of a card.

The machine has a variety of charitable items, including donating a dozen meals to a local homeless shelter; purchasing textbooks for an underprivileged school; and gifting a pair of chickens to a family on the other side of the world.

There are currently only ten of these machines in the world. The one in the video below is located in downtown Writer’s Square in Denver, Colorado. It will remain installed until January 1st, 2020.

The machines are part of an effort by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as part of their #LightTheWorld campaign. The intention is to inspire people to give during the holiday season. Other stations are located everywhere from Salt Lake City to London to Hawaii and the Phillippines.

“These Giving Machines are an example of the big things that can happen when many people give just a little,” explained Sister Bonnie H. Cordon from the organization. “That is what it means to ‘Light the World’ one by one—when we each give what we can offer, our little light adds to a brightness of hope.”

This is the third year the Giving Machines will be stationed around the world. In 2018, the initiative raised more than $2.3 million for local and global charities. Total donations for 2019 will be continuously updated throughout the season and can be viewed on the Light the World website.
