A Dutch railway company has just announced that all of their electric trains will now be powered entirely by wind energy.

A spokesman from the national railway company NS, called Ton Boon, said “Since the 1st January, 100% of our trains are running on wind energy”.

The Dutch electric company, called Eneco, won a tender that was offered by NS two years previously, and then proceeded to the two companies signing a 10-year deal which states that all NS train should run completely on wind energy by January 2018.

Boon commented, “So we in fact reached our goal a year earlier than planned”, adding that increasing the number of wind farms across the country, as well as off the coast of the Netherlands, was a huge aid in helping NS achieve its aim.

According to a joint website between Eneco and NS, around 600,000 passengers travel via wind energy each day, whilst NS operates around 5,500 train journeys every day.

Windmills provide the energy that is utilised to power the trains, and one of these windmills running for just one hour can produce enough wind energy to power a train for 120 miles, according to the company.

Eneco said, “Trains run exclusively on electricity from new renewable energy sources. To make that possible, Eneco has invested in new wind farms and other green energy production with NS to make climate-neutral travel a reality.”

Wind, which is considered as a type of solar energy, is created through the use of wind turbines which convert the kinetic energy in the wind into power which can be readily used in different industries. Therefore making it a much more sustainable energy source that is essential as the world heads towards plans of a much greener and more eco-friendly future.

There are currently plans in place to reduce the current energy used per passenger by a further 35% by 2020, compared to these same statistics in 2005.
