Imagine that you are looking for a particular collection of books and stumble upon a cat! Your first thought would probably be that it belongs to the owner, but then you look around and find adorable kittens everywhere!
No, it’s not a dream, it’s just Otis & Clementine’s Books & Coffee! This store is just outside of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada and it has found a unique way to nudge people to adopt kittens.

Cats, coffee, books, and good company, this store is a mini paradise. The kittens move around freely and you can adopt them if you want.

Ellen Helmke, the owner of Otis & Clementine’s Books & Coffee, allows the cats from the South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia rescue group so that they have a better chance of finding a forever home. “All the kittens are in and out fairly quickly, as they are adopted,” said Helmke.

So, in case you want to take a kitty home, you need to pay 255 Canadian dollars (or 194 US dollars). The kittens are managed by South Paw Conservation and the adoption fee even includes medical expenses. It is also mandatory to provide references before you can take the kitty home.

More than thirty cats have found their homes through the bookstore. Helmke explained, “People come here specifically to see the cats, and then some people just wander in to look at books and discover there are kittens…we have a hundred percent adoption rate, which is fantastic.” Her happy customers motivate her to work harder every day.

A representative of South Paw Conservation said that they have “rescued 30 puppies in 2019 from the Bahamas and Antigua and well over 50 kittens and cats locally.” They also hope that more such spacious bookstores will become a foster home for the kitties, helping them find “loving homes, provide proper medical care, food and litter through donations and spay/neuter even more kitties within the province in 2020.”

All the cats and kittens are “vet checked, vaccinated, feline leukemia tested, treated with revolution, and dewormed within the first few days of arrival or when healthy/old enough,” said the rescue group’s representative.
