As children, we all wished for supervision. In the very near future, the “superpower” may be quite common for the average human. This is because a newly-invented bionic lens can give patients vision that is 3x better than 20/20.
Developed by Dr. Garth Webb, the Ocumetics Bionic Lens was specifically developed for people who have cataracts. According to the World Health Organization, cataracts account for nearly one-third of the vision problems experienced worldwide by 285 million people. In low and middle-income countries, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness. Fortunately, better vision is just around the corner for millions of people.
During an eight-minute surgery, the dynamic lens replaces a person’s natural eye lens. Futurism reports that it is placed into the eye via a saline-filled syringe and later unravels itself in under 10 seconds. Not only will the implant prevent patients from developing cataracts, it will give them super vision. According to Webb, the lenses should feel natural and won’t result in headaches or eye strain.
The futuristic Bionic Lens took nearly a decade to develop and cost $3 million USD. Though the invention is not yet available on the market, human studies began in July 2017. By March 2018, the bionic contacts are expected to be available to the public.
The Bionic Lens would greatly enhance one’s vision, such as allowing them to read text messages from 30 feet away. Though it is a controversial implant, one cannot deny the positive repercussions which may result from its creation.
