Picking up the sweet tune of birds and the hum of car engines is something most of us take for granted. For this reason, it is always heartening to view the reactions of others experiencing new senses for the first time. To many of us, it is a reminder to be grateful for the simple things in life. And, the story below is no exception.

When baby Scarlet was just three months old, she was born premature. Her digestive tract wasn’t fully formed and, as a result, she developed intestinal problems. To protect her vulnerable immune system, she was given antibiotics. Unfortunately, the treatment ended up damaging her hearing.

Recently, Scarlet’s mother, Carol Benjamin, took the infant to the Atlanta Hearing Associates in Milledgeville, Georgia. There, Scarlet was fitted with hearing aids. Her reaction to hearing her sister’s voice for the first time is priceless:

As everyone knows when Scarlet was born she was 3 months early. She ended up getting NEC (and certain stomach infection) and the antibiotics that she needed cause hearing loss. It has been a LONG and emotional experience. She reacted to most sounds so we thought she could hear fairly well. After what I witnessed today, it was not as well as I thought. Hearing aids make a WORLD of difference! I am so blessed and thankful for Atlanta Hearing Associates in Milledgeville for all that they have done for our baby girl. Anyway, enjoy one of the absolute best days of our lives. By the way, I'm crying, you're crying, everyone is crying. 😍😍😍😭😭“To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com”

Hearing loss in infants is more common than you might think. According to March of Dimes, nearly 3 in 1,000 babies (about 12,000) are born with some kind of hearing loss in the United States of America each year. With the assistance of hearing aids, many of those affected by partial hearing loss will be able to hear the twittering calls of nature once again — just like Scarlet.
