When Gren Sowerby, 69, trekked to Maasai Mara, Kenya, he didn’t know what kind of wildlife he would encounter. Imagine his surprise when he had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a huge lion who not only roared but shared a toothy smile afterward.

Sowerby, who lives in England, has dedicated the last four decades of his life to his passion: wildlife photography. While he admits to having the perfect job he is no stranger to being “shocked” while adventuring.

According to Majestic Animals, the photographer was on a safari when he spotted a lion approximately 40 to 50 feet away. As he prepared to capture some beautiful shots, the lion decided to play some tricks of his own.

“I lent in to take a photo when he let out a huge roar — I got the shock of my life,” Sowerby told to the South West News Service. “He roared to say: ‘I’m the King of the Jungle’ and then I couldn’t believe it when he smiled at me like when someone winks at you to say like: ‘Haha!’”

Gren was shocked by the big, scary roar. But immediately after, the lion shared a smile. Despite being scared for a moment, the wildlife photographer had no ambition of leaving until he captured the unique moment.

“I was really happy with the photos, I only looked at them properly when I got home. I regularly go on these safaris and really enjoy photographing wildlife. They have grown up around the safari so they’re used to cars and tourists,” Gren Sowerby said. “The King of the Jungle is always something you’ve got to capture and I’m so pleased I got the shot.”
