Neil Degrasse Tyson Tried To Explain Gravity While Being High
Tags: opinion
Neil Degrasse Tyson is one of the most respected astrophysicists out there. His work on cosmology and especially Black Holes throughout the decades has resulted in him being exalted to the position as the go-to guy for anything extraterrestrial. Contrary to most scientists, Tyson is not shy of frequenting podcasts or talk shows, where he captivates his audience with his knowledge of the Universe. In one such interview with Joe Rogan, Tyson decided to smoke pot and then give his two cents on what gravity really is. And let’s just say, it is one of the most hilarious, yet exciting pieces of interview you will come across today. In his pot-induced stupor, Tyson does befuddle a bit but then gets right back on track.
What Is Gravity?
Hilariously, he starts off his discussion by imagining himself as an island amidst white cotton- his euphoria after having smoked pot. Then, he asks the one question that most scientists have pondered over the years- why does Gravity work? We all know how it works, but why? What is its purpose? Here, Rogan cuts him off to ask if humans actually understand what gravity really is. To which Tyson replies that gravity is simply the curvature of space and time. It is entirely space that notifies matter when and how to displace itself from its location.
Joe Rogan tries to bring something out of this cryptic statement by calling it ‘weird’, to which Tyson quips if the pot really addled the former’s vocabulary. After reiterating his statement about how gravity is the curvature of space and time, and being unable to convince Rogan of its possibility, he decides to lay it on thick. With a philosophical aura surrounding him, he talks about how the increase in our knowledge also increases the area of one’s ignorance. And as Nietzsche once famously mentioned, it was time to look into the abyss of ignorance and seek answers out of it.

And then, he revealed the biggest surprise of all- a vest that had the sketch of Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’. Now, it shouldn’t be hard for us to understand how the psychedelic images worked on Joe Rogan, considering he was stoned. Neil Degrasse Tyson was literally asking him to look into the abyss!
A Stoned Podcast!
In the last quarter of the video, we simply have two stoned humans contemplating the existence of the universe, and yet not allowing the other to state or defend their point. And while Joe Rogan did point out that Neil Degrasse Tyson was getting quite frustrated with the questions aimed at him, Tyson too was a bit disappointed by the nature of questions.

Probably why this edition of the interview never made the final cut. Or maybe Neil Degrasse Tyson didn’t really think that this was, in all possibilities, an interview. In the end, Rogan calls him out for being too defensive about something that is purely scientific, and in true Tyson fashion he responded “That’s how we roll!”
