You may recognize her as the author of the infamous Harry Potter book series, but JK Rowling is also a philanthropist. In recent weeks, the children’s book curator donated a large sum to fund multiple sclerosis (MS) research, the same debilitating condition that took her mother.

In total, the Scottish philanthropist donated a whopping £15.3 million ($18.8 million) to the University of Edinburgh. With the funds, they can further development of the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic.

As GoodNewsNetwork reports, the clinic was built in 2010 following a mighty donation from Rowling. She named the section after her mother, Anne, who died from MS at the age of 45.

“When the Anne Rowling Clinic was first founded, none of us could have predicted the incredible progress that would be made in the field of Regenerative Neurology, with the Clinic leading the charge,” said Rowling.

“I am delighted to now support the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic into a new phase of discovery and achievement, as it realizes its ambition to create a legacy of better outcomes for generations of people with MS and non-MS neurodegenerative diseases.”

In addition to furthering neurodegenerative treatments and cures, the funds will be used to finance the construction of facilities pertaining to the clinic. The donation will also be used to study how healthcare workers can improve the lives of patients suffering from similarly debilitating diseases.

“We are immensely honoured that J. K. Rowling has chosen to continue her support for the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic. This inspiring donation will fund a whole new generation of researchers who are focussed on discovering and delivering better treatments and therapies for patients,” said Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Edinburgh.
