How People Have Helped Plant 30 Million Trees By Surfing the Web

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

When confronted by the negative happenings in the world, it can be easy to believe that the majority of humans are “bad.” But in reality, most people are just trying to survive and, when they can, are willing to help out. If you don’t believe us, consider that by doing nothing more than surfing the web, people have helped plant 30 million trees.

Now, surfing the web is no mighty task. But the hundreds of thousands of people who helped make the feat possible made the conscious decision to use Ecosia, a search engine that donates all of its profits from internet searches to plant trees around the world.

As GoodNewsNetwork reports, Ecosia is similar to Google — but better. Since the site was founded in 2009, it has removed 1.5 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. It also prioritizes the user’s best interests.

For instance, Ecosia does not sell data to advertisers. In fact, searchers are encrypted. Furthermore, the site does not use external tracking tools and deletes all searches. Finally, unlike most corporations, Ecosia is all about transparency. “We know trust has to be earned,” explains the website. “That is why we publish our monthly financial reports and tree planting receipts. This way you can hold us accountable as we follow our journey to a reforested world.”

The browser is very easy to implement. To get started, download a (free) web browser extension from Ecosia’s website. Then, search away!

Every day, over 3.5 million searches are made through Google. If even a fraction of those searchers were made through Ecosia, the world we inhabit would be a much greener place. Fortunately, more and more people are learning about the search engine every day.

If you still don’t believe the world is full of good people, perhaps you should download Ecosia and search away. After all, the best way to live is to “be the change you want to see in the world.”
