Study: Young People are More Generous Toward Charities than Any Other Group

It’s time to stop the millennial bashing. Rather, let’s focus on one of the many positive attributes of the generation. According to a new survey conducted by the Charity Commission of the UK, young people are actually smarter and more generous than their older peers.

The survey revealed that youths, on average, gave $42 to charity during the holiday season. This was more than their elderly counterparts donated. GoodNewsNetwork reports that over 50 percent of the millennials also said they regularly perform quick background checks on the charities to make sure the majority of the money is going to the causes they promote. Only 29 percent of people aged 75 or older take the time to ensure financial transparency and reliability.

Another stereotype busted by the survey is that youngsters are obsessed with their phones. 44 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds said they would give up their smartphones for the month of December if it meant $670 (£500) would be given to a charity of their course. Overall, less than one-third of the rest of the population said the same.

Said Helen Stephenson of the Charity Commission: “This research shows that Christmas remains a time of generous charitable giving, and that is to be celebrated. I’m particularly pleased that young people give generously, but also that they are more likely to make basic checks before giving to their chosen charity than people from their parents’ generation.”

“This hints at a welcome shift in the public’s relationship with charities and shows why charities should be open and transparent about the way they are run and how they spend their money. By doing so they can encourage donors’ trust and generosity,” she concluded.

The public needs to pay attention to this survey, as it supports the notion that young people are tired of a suffocating system that serves only the few, and are willing to work toward positive change. I personally know this to be the case. Of course, everyone has the right to make up their own opinion. Let’s hope this latest survey inspires at least a few folks to be less harsh on the up-and-coming generation which will inherit this world.
