‘Vegan’ Named Top Wedding Trend In 2017 By Vogue Magazine

Because plant-based diets (vegetarian and vegan — the latter meaning one eschews all animal products) have proven health and environmental benefits, the trend of eating meat and dairy-free is growing world-wide. In fact, more and more couples are choosing to serve predominantly vegan fare at their wedding receptions, as the food is oftentimes both delicious and nutritious.

Vogue magazine recently affirmed this when it listed “sustainable, local, [and] raw” as one of the top trends in the 2017 wedding industry. Napa-based caterer Paula LeDuc commented on this development, stating: “People are much more food savvy, eating healthier and desiring local farm–cultivated ingredients.”

Whereas couples used to demand organic ingredients, now, more and more are requesting vegan or vegetarian fare. In fact, more weddings have featured vegan options than vegetarian, according to several caterers. Common questions asked by couples include, “Which farm does it come from? Is it local? Is the egg from this morning?” said celebrity wedding planner Colin Cowie.

Cowie added, “Without doubt, we are seeing more brides and grooms feature vegan options versus vegetarian. The vegan movement is well on the way, and most top restaurants today now offer a vegan menu. Vegan used to mean the grilled portobello mushroom; today’s chefs are preparing exquisite and delicious vegan options.”

As interest in holistic health and natural medicine increases, a growing number of chefs are choosing to specialize in plant-based cuisine. As a result, few engaged couples are finding it difficult to source satisfying, vegan fare for their big days. It helps that cuisine free of meat, dairy, and common allergens can be delicious.

Jamie Schmones Erickson of Poppy’s Catering in Brooklyn told Vogue that sometimes, couples choose to hand over total control to the chef so they can utilize what is in season. “Our clientele defer to us on a very seasonal menu, leaving a finalized menu till the last moment so that they can have the best of what’s coming from our local farms,” says Erickson.
