Good news for environmentalists and animal rights activists who can’t get enough of the Netflix show Orange is the New Black. Actress Danielle Brooks, who plays the outspoken character Taystee, recently adopted a vegan diet and is now advocating for the cruelty-free way of life.
On Instagram, Brooks shared a picture with her 2.2 million followers of a pot of pasta with tempeh. The comment read, “Vegan life! Day nine of the rest of my life??” The next day, she then tweeted to her 358,000 fans that she is on day ten of eating vegan and is “feeling solid.”

As OneGreenPlanet reports, little is presently known about why Brooks decided to go vegan. Nonetheless, we applaud her for the effort.
There are a multitude of benefits to adopting a plant-based diet. Not only does an increased consumption of fiber improve digestion, eating more fruits and vegetables reduces one’s risk of developing diseases of affluence, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Adopting a vegetarian and/or vegan diet also benefits the planet, as it minimizes an individual’s carbon footprint (an excess of carbon production is fueling climate change).
Of course, let’s not forget animal welfare benefits. When one eschews dairy and meat, they stop funding modern farming practices which result in animals — including pigs, chickens and bovine — being treated cruelly and oftentimes in inhumane ways.
Thanks to Brooks, more people may feel encouraged to give vegetarianism or veganism a try. Such is a positive repercussion of celebrities using their platforms to “do good.” If you’d like to adopt a plant-based diet, download a free “getting started” resource here.
