Hansjörg Wyss, a Philanthropist and the CEO of the Wyss Foundation, has promised to donate $1 billion in order to save the planet’s ocean and lands, back in 2018. The foundation plans to donate the money gradually in the next ten years.

Who will lead this ambitious plan? The money will be given to conservation programs that are headed by indigenous people and conservation groups. Wyss’ aim is to conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030. According to the entrepreneur, open lands and water bodies should be converted into public national parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges. This will not only combat the ever-rising levels of pollution but also give thousands of species their natural habitat, preventing their extinction. The foundation also strives to create awareness regarding the global crisis of climate change and depleting flora and fauna of the world. You can learn more about their plan on their website.

In a New York Times article, Hansjörg Wyss explained, everyone, from a humble citizen to a top-notch government official, from a kid to an old man, should be terrified by the humongous gap between our tiny protected area of the natural world and what is yet to be conserved. We all need to try and bridge this gap before we completely destroy this planet.

Wyss established the foundation in 1998 and helped the local communities protect more than five million acres of land globally. He claims that it should be for all the living things – making sure that the planet is protected by and for the people, forever. His foundation has spent the last two decades donating a lump sum amount to conserve the natural habitats all around the world. Their hard work has paid off as they have protected almost forty million acres of water and land according to Live Kindly reports.

Such endeavors make us feel hopeful about the future. It is high time we, as citizens of this planet, try to do our bit to make it a better place. We can start from our own localities by organizing voluntary groups and spread awareness. We can even try to recycle things on our own and plant more trees. Climate change is going to get us all in the end as we can already see signs of a scary future.

Let’s become the change we want to see in this world. As of now, Wyss Campaign for Nature continues to conduct several green projects. Let’s go green too!
