If you think of our lives as a story book- the words we use could be thought of as the details that fill the pages. It could be a horror, a love story or a straight up fantasy. But all would be dependant on the words you choose to fill the lines.

Our words are mantras and that which we repeat often enough begin to shape our reality, the book example above might be a metaphor, but it could be closer to reality than you think.

Repeating words is the same things as casting a spell(ing) and here are 5 very easy mantras you can use to construct your world.

I don’t have to apologize for being here

This came to me when I was in a park after dark, I did not have a dog or anyone else present, but wanted to sit and meditate under a tree one evening. Someone passed me when walking their dog and I thought my presence may make them feel uncomfortable. This is where the mantra “I don’t have to apologize for being here” came from.

Society can often leave us feeling uncomfortable in a situation which is unavoidable- you bump into someone by mistake, you feel awkward at an event you don’t want to be at and/or say the wrong thing at the wrong time. This is reality and while it is good to hold your hands up and own your mistakes, you don’t have to apologize for being born and you have just as much right to be here as anyone else.

Everything is perfect

I spent some time in the jungle last year and one of the things I realised is that everything no matter how imperfect it seems is actually perfect. The rain, the sun, the mosquitoes and the different seasons are all in perfect balance. This is not to say there are not imperfections in ourselves and the world around us, but that we can seek out the perfection in the imperfection and know that everything in every moment is in perfect order.

I am enough

You are enough, in fact you are perfect for your purpose and have a very good reason for being here. Sometimes we need to search deep inside and out to find that purpose- but you are perfectly placed and equipped to deal with whatever it may be.

I am exactly where I am supposed to be

It is easy to get lost in life, there is an infinite amount of information to process, an infinite amount of space to see and an infinite amount of feelings to feel. Getting lost is actually inevitable and if you are yet to get lost, you probably need to look a little deeper.

In our darkest moments we get to see just how far we are able to be pushed without breaking and in this moment, you are exactly where you need to be.

This moment will pass

The only thing that matters is this moment, and this moment quickly becomes a memory- then the next moment continues in an infinite loop of present, then past. The moment and feelings associated with it will always pass- this is true for the darkness and many often refer to the darkness when saying these words, but also for the beautiful moments.

You cannot capture a moment and relive it over and over, only give the illusion that you are doing so and this is where all suffering comes from. We want to get back to the good times or never repeat the bad so much that we forget about this moment.

There are many more mantras and the best are those you create yourself for your specific situation.  These are just 5 of mine that have helped me when I was in need.

A technique I use for reciting these mantras is with a buddhist prayer bead. They have 108 beads and passing each bead through my hands I repeat the chosen mantra. This is the perfect start to the day or can be used to counter negative thoughts and feelings as they arise with an opposing mantra.
