It seems incomprehensible that no other animal on planet Earth pays to “exist,” yet this is the reality for humans as we know it. This acknowledged, it makes sense that many people are tempted to live in the most affordable destinations so they don’t need to work as hard. Alternatively, one may desire to save money so travels or ideas can be pursued in the future.

Whatever one’s reasoning for desiring to live in an economical location, someone with such grand ambitions will surely benefit from the following list. From a small town in Nicaragua to an enchanting town in France, following are 5 places you can live for under $500 a month.

1) Leon, Nicaragua

Costa Rica tends to be the #1 destination for foreigners, but its neighbor, Nicaragua, is just as beautiful and accommodating to tourists or prospective expats. As a result of bad press and a troubled past with its former and current President, the country has become an affordable place to live.

Nicaragua is host to gorgeous lakes, volcanoes and is an easy place to get around if you brush up on your Spanish. Similar to Costa Rica, there is also a growing community of expats one can connect with to ensure their transition goes smoothly.

In many tropical countries, food is incredibly cheap, as is housing due to the developing world’s economy. Leon is a preferred destination for many, as it is home to a university, a theatre and museums. Additionally, it is situated less than 1/2 hour away from the coast. In some places, you can rent a two- or three-bedroom abode for as little as $500 – $600 a month.

2) Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai is a popular destination for foodies and digital nomads because it’s a cheap place to live, as well as a cultural hotspot. Some expats can live in Chiang Mai for as little as $200 a month. Simple accommodations, transport via bicycle, low-cost noodle stalls and plant-based home cooking allow someone on a budget to thrive in Thailand. Other expats can thrive on $500 – $600 a month, which allows for an apartment as well as funds to spend on sight-seeing and local delicacies.

3) Las Tablas, Panama

Las Tablas is a beautiful location anyone on a budget can live. Panama has affordable medical care facilities in addition to a developed infrastructure, making it a comfortable place for retirees or ambitious travelers who desire to live somewhere affordable.

Similar to Nicaragua, food and housing can be incredibly cheap. And, if one knows basic Spanish, they will not have a problem getting around in the country.

One downside to this location is that it is a considerable drive away from Panama City, where the cost of living is double that in Las Tablas. Near the beach in Las Tablas, however, one can rent an abode for $300 to $400 a month – and snack on all the mangoes and bananas they desire.

4) Medellin, Colombia

Don’t believe the hype – Colombia is a great place for expats or travelers on a budget. Similar to Leon, Nicaragua, the climate is gorgeous and there are plenty of natural sites to check out. Additionally, a savvy individual can find accommodation for as low as $200 a month. Or, someone can spring for a two-bedroom apartment in a new building, in a prime location, for $700 – $800 a month.

5) Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Word of advice – if you visit France, do yourself a favor and actually learn the language first. After that is accomplished, be sure to visit Cessenon-sur-Orb, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southwestern France. The colorful, eclectic area is very welcoming to travelers and retirees.

Additionally, one can keep themselves occupied by visiting historic sites, such as prehistoric villages and buildings constructed in medieval times. In the French country corner, expats from all nationalities can be found. And, considering one can rent a modest abode for 400 to 600 euro, it’s no surprise as to why.
