You’ve seen those Instagram photos: they’re perfectly lit, taken from a flattering angle and make the person featured in them look like a million bucks. Oftentimes, they are the result of at least 5-10 minutes of tedious work and filters. While this is common knowledge to the average social media user, it doesn’t detract from the fact that most of us wish we could look like that regardless. That’s where 21-year-old Michelle Liu is different, however.
Liu, a passionate traveler who has championed the “chinning” trend, is aware that only 5 percent of the population naturally meets the criteria for ‘model’. As a result, she has stopped giving any f**ks about her looks and goes out of her way to capture unflattering travel ‘selfies’ from awkward angles. Because she is fighting against “perfect” social media photos, she is winning over the internet.
DesignTaxi reports that Liu began taking unflattering travel selfies to remind herself — and others — that it’s important not to take oneself too seriously. She explained to Mic via email:
“My chinning entertained my friends all through middle school, high school and college, at which point I decided to share my chin with the world.”
Liu began @chinventures in September of 2016. Since then, she has taken hilarious “chinfies” in places such as Prague and Beijing. To capture the artful selfies, Liu uses her iPhone and a selfie stick. She said, “Strangers always notice me chinning…Some appear shocked, others confused, but across the board from my experience, they are usually entertained.”
By not taking herself too seriously, she has made new friends and expanded her worldview. Reportedly, one of her favorite experiences involved four flight attendants. “I never know how strangers will respond when I explain my account and ask them to take ‘chinfies’ with me but this particular crew was so friendly and open to the idea,” she said.
Liu admits she’s okay being “chinsta-famous.” 10+ of her “chinfies” follow:
