Trump Says Pro Mountain Climbers Can’t Scale Border Wall – They Disagree

United States President Donald Trump recently made a bold claim about the southern border wall, insisting that it is impossible to climb. At a ceremony in Otay Mesa, California last week, in which a new section of the wall was being unveiled, Trump claimed that the wall is specifically designed to stop climbers.

This wall can’t be climbed. This is very very hard, and what the panel does at the top, as I said, it’s structural but it’s also very hard to get by that panel. Plus it’s designed to absorb heat, so it’s extremely hot. The wall is, you won’t be able to touch it, you can fry an egg on that wall,” Trump said.

The president went on to claim that professional “world-class mountain climbers” were hired to test out the effectiveness of the wall.

“We have, I guess you could say, world-class mountain climbers. We got climbers. We had 20 mountain climbers. That’s all they do—they love to climb mountains… They’re very good, and some of them were champions. And we gave them different prototypes of walls, and this was the one that was hardest to climb,” Trump explained.

In the days since, reporters have rushed to interview professional climbers to see if any of them had been contacted by the Trump administration. However, no climbers were found that knew anything about the deal, and many of them doubted that the president’s claims were even true.

Jesse Grupper, who won gold at the 2019 USA Climbing Sport & Speed Open National Championships, told The Daily Beast that, “I have never heard of any climbers ever being recruited to try and climb a border wall.”

Kyra Condie, another professional climber who ranked second in the U.S. women’s boulderer, doubted that any professional climbers would be willing to help Trump with such a task.

“I absolutely have not heard of anyone testing sections of border wall. It would even be hard to find any of us willing to do anything to help Trump and his efforts in any way,” Condie said.

Other professionals suggested that the wall actually looked pretty easy to climb.

In the days since Trump gave his speech at the wall, videos have begun to circulate showing how other parts of the border fence have been managed by climbers very easily.

These older sections of the fence do not look very different from the section that was just unveiled by Trump last week, although there are reportedly a few extra steps that were taken with the new construction, like the heat variable that was mentioned in his speech. However, after the ceremony, President Trump signed the wall, and didn’t seem to suffer any from any burns.

In March of 2017, Mexican congressman Braulio Guerra scaled the wall himself and posted a video to Twitter.

“You can climb it with great ease, one climbs in an instant. I climbed it in Tijuana, one of the highest parts, even from a distance this looks very complex, but there are young people that go up and down, at all times,” Guerra said in the video.

In another video, young teenage girls can be seen scaling an older section of the border wall in under 20 seconds.
