Stunning Map Shows Every River Basin In The United States

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

There’s a lot more beneath our feet than most of us realize. A stunning, new map created by Imgur user Fejetlenfej reveals this — and more.

The Geographer and GIS analyst has a “lifelong passion for beautiful maps.” It is for this reason he created the artistic map which highlights the massive expanse of river basins across the United States. According to the creator, the map visualizes the Strahler Stream Order Classification. Reportedly, the higher stream orders are indicated as thicker lines.

The map was made using the open-source QGIS software. In total, there are 18 major river basins in the 48 states of the US. The 18 major river basins follow:

1.) Pacific Northwest Basin

2.) California River Basin

3.) Great Basin

4.) Lower Colorado River Basin

5.) Upper Colorado River Basin

6.) Rio Grande River Basin

7.) Texas Gulf Coast Basin

8.) Arkansas-White-Red Basin

9.) Lower Mississippi River Basin

10.) Missouri River Basin

11.) Souris-Red-Rainy Basin

12.) Upper Mississippi Basin

13.) Great Lakes Basin

14.) Tennessee River Basin

15.) Ohio River Basin

16.) South Atlantic-Gulf Basin

17.) Mid-Atlantic Basin

18.) New England Basin

Much of the map is dominated by the massive catchment area for the Mississippi river. The Arkansas-White-Red Basin is also clearly seen and is highlighted in pink. As the Daily Mail reports, a large portion of the map shows the Pacific Northwest basin. Those feed-ins are illustrated in a brown-orange color. The Upper and Lower Colorado River basins are also exposed and stand out in bright yellow.

Green identifies the Souris-Red-Rainy Basin and the Great Lake Basins. Blue indicates the Rio Grande, which reaches all the way down to the bottom of Texas. Finally, smaller systems that border the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are revealed in a “jumble of rainbow” colors.

The Imgur user’s map offers a unique perspective of the many rivers that extend throughout the United States. If you enjoyed this resource, please share it with other geography enthusiasts and nature lovers.
