Japan has always been well known for its love for art with flowers. All through the year, colorful blossoms cover the numerous parks of the country. Tourists visiting the islands are bound to come across one beautiful field of flowers or the other. One of their favorites is the baby blue flowers known as Nemophilas. And when it comes to the end of spring, these baby blue eyes will steal your heart.
The fields are mostly owned by the government or private farmers. Many of them display vibrant rows with flowers from a variety of species. However, if you visit the Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture this time of the year, you will witness an endless sea of the baby blue flowers.

These baby blue flowers are members of the Nemophila Menziesii and got the nickname Baby blue eyes owing to the gentle blue hue and its resemblance in shape with the human eye. The Hitachi park grows a wide variety of seasonal flowers but its main attraction in the season between late April to the middle of May is the exploding beauty of these blue Nemophila flowers.

It is a sight to behold as 4.5 million brilliant blue Nemophilas across the Miharashi hills’ 190-hectare park sway their heads in union against the stunning blue sky, highlighted only by the blue sea in the middle. A breathtaking display of azure hue! Except for the walkways, everything within view is covered by the baby blue. While an uphill glance will give you an incredible panoramic view, if you are standing on the top and looking downwards, the endless stretches form a stunning vista and can be seen gradually blending in with the sea.

Every year thousands of visitors come to this park during this period. However, this won’t be the case this year. Keeping in mind the potential for danger in exposing a huge number of tourists to each other during the pandemic, the 190-hectare landscape has been kept closed to visitors.

But, good news for those who are unable to visit the garden. The lockdown doesn’t mean that you can’t have your own garden of Nemophilas. The Baby blue Menzies is a very common annual plant that can be easily grown in the backyard as ground cover. If your garden is somewhere in USDA hardiness zones 2-10, you will be able to successfully nurture the plants.

All it needs are partial sunlight and a lot of water for germination. Fertilizer is also not that essential. Its stem is so small that it gets completely covered under the petals. The plants are hardly ever grown indoors. These are plants with a short lifespan and barely last through the winter, so pests won’t be a real problem.
