Farmed Salmon – Most Toxic Food In The World?
Tags: opinion
Many of us think that eating fish will make us healthier. For years we have been hearing how fish is way healthier than any other type of meat. However, these days the fish that we can buy in the supermarkets is often farmed and it turns out that it is one of the most unhealthy products we can consume.
I recently came across this documentary exposing how fish farms operate. More than 50% of all farmed salmon in the world, comes from Norwegian farms. It turns out that the fish is treated with heavy pesticides that can have neurotoxic effects on humans. Some researchers claim that farmed Norwegian salmon can be up to 5 times more toxic than any other type of food.
Another very popular fish – panga is farmed with more than 90% of the world’s supply coming from Vietnam. The problem with farmed fish is that often polluted waters make fish prone to diseases and antibiotics have to be added to the water. The bacteria become resistant to antibiotics so more of it has to be added with time, it creates a vicious cycle.
The problem is not only with farmed fish but with overfishing in general. We often think that oceans are so vast and there is plenty of fish available. However, it turns out that over a few short decades due to unsustainable fishing practices, most of the supply deteriorated. Scientists warn that we might be out of fish in the oceans in a few short daces if it continues this way.
