Expand Your Thinking With These 11 Quotes By Stephen Hawking

By Mayukh Saha / Truth Theory

We all wish we could be like Stephen Hawking, a man whose mind wandered around the universe while his body was on earth. This great British theoretical scientist is famous for his pioneering work on black holes and relativity. He was a prolific writer whose several extraordinary books included A Brief History Of Time in 1988. What made him special was that he awakened the interest in science among people with his lucid and profound presentation of science that made it accessible to even the novice and the uninitiated.

Sometimes the bravest thing of all is to keep on living though there are easier roads to take. At 21, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In simple terms, the nerves controlling his muscles started to shut down. He was given two and a half years to live. The realization of his condition, and the fact that he did not have long to live, spurred Hawkins to immerse himself into his work and research. This man fought and tamed the cosmos and taught us what it truly means to celebrate being human. A prolific writer, his writing remains a source of inspiration to us.

Ever The Optimist

One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose, and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.

The Crusader

We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain to look inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet.

Science And Religion

There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, and science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works.

Sense Of Humor

The idea of 10 dimensions might sound exciting, but they would cause real problems if you forget where you parked your car.

Aliens

If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.

The Inquisitive Mind

I am just a child who has never grown up. I still keep asking these ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. Occasionally I find an answer.

Hope

If you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up. There’s a way out.

Science

Science is not only a disciple of reason but also one of romance and passion.

Beyond Earth

I don’t think the human race will survive the next thousand years unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet. But I’m an optimist. We will reach out to the stars.

God

What I have done is to show that it is possible for the way the universe began to be determined by the laws of science. In that case, it would not be necessary to appeal to God to decide how the universe began. This doesn’t prove that there is no God, only that God is not necessary.

Disability

My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your disability doesn’t prevent you doing well, and don’t regret the things it interferes with. Don’t be disabled in spirit, as well as physically.

We have a lot to learn from these wise words.
