The CNN network saw a tremendous reduction in its viewership, a staggering 41% drop from September 2020.
News channels have not slowed down ever since President Biden took the oath, but the CNN Ratings say otherwise.
It was a poor September for the news network, as the CNN Ratings stated that they failed to reach 1 million views on any of its programs for 23 days in September. This equated to a massive 77% of the time, as per the Nielsen data.
Last September saw the final weeks of the 2020 election, where CNN averaged a total of 950,000 daily viewers. The year, they just averaged 557,000, which is approximately a drop of 41%. The primetime viewership was cut in half during the same time from 1.5 million to 770,000.
How The Various Shows Had Fallen Behind As Per The CNN Ratings
“Cuomo Prime Time” was hailed as CNN’s most-watched show but had fallen behind Anderson Cooper. It reached a million viewers only twice, compared to Anderson Cooper’s six times. It averaged only 874,000 viewers last month.
Hannity averaged 2.9 million views while The Rachel Maddow Show averaged 2.3 million, in the same 9 pm ET timeslot. Both these shows never fell below the 1 million mark.
Chris Cuomo was recently accused of sexual harassment and had lost nearly half his viewers since last year, where he averaged 1.65 million views. He was accused of sexual harassment by the TV producer Shelley Rose during their time as colleagues in 2005 at ABC News. He was also swept up in other scandals that plagued his brother, Andrew Cuomo, the ex-New York Governor.
CNN’s morning program “New Day” didn’t experience significant decline, though it had long been one of CNN’s least-viewed shows in the entire lineup. The duo of John Berman-Brianna Keilar averaged below half a million viewers and slipped by 29% from a 609,000 average when Berman was paired with Alisyn Camerota last September to just 429,000 this September.

Brian Stelter from CNN had spent his entire month below a million as his show “Reliable Sources” averaged only 738,000 views. This was a drop by 20% from his 924,000 average back in September 2020.
He has managed to exceed a million views twice since March. It included the news coverage of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic Space Flight in July and the other was during the military withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration. His viewers had dropped 59% since January and he lost 18% of his viewership in August.
CNN Ratings in September were quite awful after the disastrous summer that they had. CNN failed to reach a million viewers from the 1st of June till the 31st of August (92 days) on 53 of these days, which made up 58% of the summer. It only averaged 603,000 in total day viewership which was a staggering decrease of 42% from the 2020 summer.
