Diver Trades Octopus A Protective Shell For A Plastic Cup It Was Using

By John Vibes / Truth Theory

The world’s oceans and waterways are filling up with more plastic each day, and much of the wildlife that inhabits these areas are left to deal with the pollution. Sadly, many times the animals don’t know that these artificial items are bad for them, and end up consuming them or using them in other ways.

Diver Pall Sigurdsson noticed a creature in the waters attempting to use a flexible plastic cup for protection, while swimming in the waters near Lembeh, Indonesia. The small octopus that he encountered would typically use a shell for protection, but picked up a cup instead.

Sigurdsson realized that if the cup remained as this creature’s protection, it would be an easy target for predators, but it would also likely kill anything that ate it in the process as well. So Sigurdsson worked with the creature for a few minuted to get it into a proper protective shell.

The video below shows the encounter between Sigurdsson and the small octopus. In the footage, the creature can be seen latching onto the shell when the diver finally presents one that it can fit into.

According to an Ellen MacArthur Foundation report that we have referenced numerous times in the past, there will be more plastics in the ocean than there are fish by the year 2050 if the current rate of plastic pollution continues. Scientists estimate that plastic takes over 400 years to decompose, and that about 8.8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans every year.

Earlier this year, Truth Theory reported on a disturbing study which found that we are absorbing tens of thousands of plastic particles each year, just in the food we eat and the air that we breathe. It was also noted in the study, that drinking a lot of bottled water can nearly double the presence of toxins in our bodies.
