Adidas Unveils One-of-a-Kind Football Jerseys Made From Recycled Materials

by Amanda Froelich,

Over the past 50 years, global use of plastic has increased 20-fold. And in the next 20 years, the use of plastic is expected to double again. This is a sobering reality, one all humans need to be aware of. Why? Because the effects of relying on plastic are detrimental to human health, the environment, and wildlife.

As plastic slowly decomposes, it leaches hazardous chemicals into the environment. Left in natural environments, it may also be ingested by wildlife, resulting in choking or death. Finally, humanity’s dependence on plastics is exacerbating the waste crisis. 80 percent of all trash tossed into landfills ends up in the oceans, where it swirls into great convergences such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Plastic litter has now been found in all corners of the Earth — and humans are to blame. It’s time we move away from plastic, and sportswear company Adidas is leading the way.

Recently, Adidas unveiled the first-ever football jerseys made out of upcycled and reused materials. As GoodNewsNetwork reports, the jerseys will be sported by the University of Miami football team during their 2018 sports season, which begins in September. The new uniforms are made out of 70 percent raw yarn material that is woven from fishing nets and other pollution recovered from the ocean. Reportedly, the Hurricanes team is “excited” to be wearing the eco-friendly uniforms.

For this initiative, Adidas partnered with Parley for the Oceans. In the past, the two companies produced sneakers and other gear made from upcycled ocean materials. “This partnership gives our student-athletes an opportunity to make a difference in our community by promoting sustainability efforts on campus, around South Florida – and across the globe,” said athletics director Blake James.

After the 2018 football season, the uniforms will be auctioned off to raise money for an educational research fund at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. If you’d like to buy your own upcycled athletic wear, check out the product line from Adidas and Parley.
