How many times have you played the lottery? Now, how many times have you actually won? More than likely, the answer is between 1 and 5, and the winnings were less than $20. Don’t feel bad, this is pretty common. What’s not common is playing the lottery once and receiving a guaranteed earnings for life. Yet, this is exactly what occurred for a lucky 18-year-old named Charlie Lagarde.
To celebrate her 18th birthday, Lagarde decided to buy a lottery ticket and champagne. She will forever remember that ticket — not because it was her first, but because it was also a winning ticket for the $1 million jackpot.
As The Washington Post reports, the total winnings after taxes is about $780,000 — a pretty nice sum of cash! After consulting with a financial advisor, Lagarde decided to give herself $1,000 every week for the rest of her life.
“It’s without taxes so it’s equivalent to a salary of more than $100,000 a year, so it’s a great start in life for that young lady,” said a spokesman for the lottery corporation. “That was her first lottery ticket ever and she fell upon a winning ticket.”
What will the Quebec teenager do with the money? Travel, of course, as well as finance her education. The lucky lady’s dream is to work for National Geographic.
According to the Daily Mail, Lagarde is one of the youngest people ever to win such a large sum in North America. Earlier this year, 20-year-old Shane Missler from Florida won $452 million in the mega millions lottery. He told the press that he would “retire” with the money, as well as us it to “do good.” It seems Lagarde intends to do the same.
