Pregnant Lion Saved From Syrian Zoo Gives Birth Just Hours After Rescue

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Earlier this week, activists with the animal charity and rescue organization Four Paws helped rescue five lions from a zoo in Aleppo. The city has been a battlefield for the Syrian civil war, and the big cats are considered lucky to even be alive. The most notable news concerning the lions’ rescue, however, is that one lioness gave birth to a cub just hours after being rescued from the city.

According to GoodNewsNetwork, a lioness named Dana was close to giving birth in a war zone. Fortunately, she was transported to the Al Ma’wa for Nature and Wildlife sanctuary in northern Jordan just in time. Just hours after landing, the anticipated event began.

Reportedly, caretakers were concerned about whether or not she would keep the cub. Wrote the Four Paws UK Facebook page: “Our team on site was very concerned about whether the lioness would accept the cub or kill it, as this is what lions sometimes do when they are under enormous stress. But luckily that wasn’t the case. She cleaned the cub and nursed it. This is a true sign that she feels safe at Al Ma’wa.”

Since a previous ultrasound revealed that Dana is pregnant with two cubs, wildlife specialists are eagerly awaiting the birth of the second lion. The gender of the first remains unknown.
